Red Hat / IBM Lotus Notes Live DVD Install Guide

Understanding What You Are Doing

These instructions will help you to download a Live DVD which contains an entire operating system and installed applications. If you are connected to the Internet via a slow connection, like a dial-up modem, then downloading this live DVD will be an extremely time-consuming process. For example, if you are downloading the DVD with a a 56K modem connection it will take approximately 32 hours to complete the download.

Make Room and Download

You will need to have approximately 1 Gigabyte of storage to downloads the DVD ISO. Once you have freed up this much room, you may download the iso from the following url:

http://rhx.s3.amazonaws.com/iso/Red_Hat_IBM_Lotus_Notes_8.iso

Validating the ISO images

After downloading the ISO images, check the SHA1 checksums for the ISO to ensure that your download was successful. Do this by running the sha1sum program from a shell prompt against your ISO image and comparing the value returned against the output below:

985e1f66fd0f78e1520a76b465e25887e7f1c6b0 Red_Hat_IBM_Lotus_Notes_8.iso

If the SHA1 sums match, continue with the Write the Files to Media section below, or if you want to execute the ISO locally, then continue with the Launching in KVM section.

Write the files to Media

If you are already running Red Hat or Fedora refer to CD-Rs and CD-RWs (Red Hat Linux Getting Started Guide) for instructions on using cdrecord to burn the ISOs to CD. If you are using another operating system, refer to the documentation for your burning software.

Be sure to label the DVDs/CDs after burning them.

Boot from the DVD

You will have to make sure that your computer can boot from the DVD or first CD. Refer to your system's documentation for details. On PCs, this usually involves BIOS settings. On Mac systems, this is usually accomplished by holding down the C key while the system starts. Some newer systems allow booting a single time from the optical drive by pressing a special key as the system starts.

Launching in KVM

If you wish to execute the DVD locally, you can do this via kvm. Install the kvm package and then execute the following command as root from the directory you downloaded the iso image to:

qemu-kvm -m 512 --cdrom Red_Hat_IBM_Lotus_Notes_8.iso

After Boot

After booting the iso (either the media or via qemu) you should select:

Boot Red_Hat_IBM_Lotus_Notes_8

You will then be shown a PDF file with the license terms for notes. You can close this window by clicking on the "x" in the top right of the window. You can then explore Lotus Notes 8 by clicking on the Lotes Notes 8 icon, or explore RHX by clicking on the RHX icon. The README.pdf provides more instructions for using the Lotes Notes demo.
